One thing I never would have guessed that I would do would be to teach. Let alone enjoy it. But as I am learning about this adventure I am on, I can´t hold any expectations and I need to be willing to say yes to everything! So when our team was told we were going to teach English to kids from first grade to high schoolers, I knew that this was the time to be willing and to grow.
Our group split into pairs and went to different grades, so Mike and I headed off to teach third graders. We had a few minutes to pull together a short lesson plan, but even though we walked in with a game plan things never work out as planned. So we had to improvise and as usual God has a perfect design for what He wants us to do and things work out for His glory when we just let go. We were able to teach them some basic English phrases such as how are you?, my name is…, and nice to meet you! We also taught them how to count to 15, to recognize the numbers written out, and an English word for every letter in the alphabet. It completely amazed me how quickly they picked up what we taught them, not only through memorization but they actually learned what we had taught and retained it.
I never thought something as simple as being able to teach the language I already know and use everyday would be so impactful and useful to others. When I think of making a difference, I think of big changes, but as I continue to learn everyday most of the times it is the small changes that make the biggest impact. The principle that we work with is completely overjoyed by our team being able to teach these students and seeing his huge smile everytime we arrive at the school is heartwarming. So now I look at teaching in a new light, not something that would be an annoyance to me but something that can change the world for someone else. God challenges us to open up and try out things that we wouldn´t normally do and He always uses those experiences in unexpected, completely blessed ways.
