Holding Hands

In our short time here in El Salvador, my amazing team and I have already been on countless and unforgettable adventures. I want to write about a seemingly insignificant experience with a young girl, that completely warmed my soul, named Lupe.

We went to a church to spend time with kids sponsered by Compassion. The team disperesed to their respective positions, the boys playing futbol and the girls running around with the little ones. I approached a young girl that looked about my sister's age. She immediately brushed me off and walked away. Being an almost teenage girl, I didn´t think much of it and went to play tag with some of the other kids.

After a little while I saw the same girl sitting alone on concrete steps. I decided to try again and sat next to her. Her name was Lupe, she was 11 years old, had a scar stretching from her chin to her cheek, extremely shy and very beautiful. We talked about little things; the weather, where I was from, how many sibilings we had, nothing profound. After several minutes of sitting in silence I told her I was going to play tag again.

As I stood in the blistering sun, watching my team smile, laugh and play with the kids I felt a young hand slip into mine. It was Lupe. Her smile at that moment melted my heart and it hit me: God is everywhere. God is in the church we went to, the extremely hot sunshine, the beautful smiles of all the kids and team members, my simple words to Lupe, and in that girl's hand (who told me felt invisible) that grabbed mine. Lupe is most definitely not invisible and she has no idea how simply honding my hand could impact me and hopefully all of you.
