During my time here in El Salvador I have had the opportunity to not only get to now El Salvadorians, but also Canadians. The Canucks I have met make me proud to call myself one of them. They come to El Salvador with an organization called Shelter. They spend a week in the San Vicente area. In that week they will build anywhere from 4 to 15 houses. These houses are purchased by money that they have fundraised. All the homes are put up in nearby villages. They are given to people that desperately need better living conditions.
Whe I go to visit these poor villages I see house after house that hage been built by foreigners. I know the appreciation the El Salvadorians have for these kind souls. It is radical to them that someone could invest time, money and effort into someone they don´t even know yet.
These Canadians don´t just build houses. they build relationships with the people here. Watching them interact with the locals at church is beautiful. Many have returned with more groups because they have fallen in love with this place.
I understand the feeling!
San Vicente and area is an incredible place. I have a dream of also returning someday. I would like to do so through the Shelter program. Hopefully bringing my own group to build houses for a week. Because when you find somewhere as awesome as this, you just have to share it!
